When I was a kid at junior school in the early war years there was such poverty about you wouldn't believe it. If you had an apple for break time there would be a crowd of the less fortunate around watching you eat it and calling "Giz yer gowk please"

The same kids after school would have their shoes taken off, not to see them until the next school day, and go out to play until nightfall in bare feet.

Thank goodness those days are behind us.

Bagsy your gowk was often said when I was a kid.It was during rationing and I would eat all of the apple including the pips.
