Great track! I like range of different music but Never Mind the *******s was a game changing album. It was always a myth (encouraged by McClaren) that they couldn't play but -Sid Vicious's bass playing apart-they most certainly could- especially Steve Jones on guitar. Session guitarist Chris Speeding is often mistakenly said to have played a lot of stuff on the album but he was one of its producers and recalls that his original demos were not liked by the band or manager precisely because you could hear quite clearly what each instrument was doing and the level of proficiency. The band, however, preferred what he called a "guitar soup" sound. Despite the mythology of punk bands being all novice players using 3 chord tricks the top bands like The *** Pistols, Buzzcocks, Stranglers etc could all play well enough, it was just part of the anti-overblown muso stance.

Good post - I wasn't quite old enough to appreciate punk but remember an old Top of the Pops Christmas Special in the mid 80's and the Pistols were on playing Let's Pretty Vacant, instantly liked it. I like Lydon too - speaks from the heart and doesn't give a fk who's listening!

In 1978 the Pistols were mind-blowing. With the wisdom of hindsight, "she ain't no human being," "the fascist regime," "there's no future for England's dreaming" seem toxic and destructive of your country's defining traditions. It seemed at the time they were punching up at overpowering institutions. In retrospect, they were punching down, piling on to a beleaguered society.

Lydon is an intelligent and articulate person. He outgrew Rotten long ago.

God save the Queen. She is amazing.

They asked Lydon if he was worried that Saville would do him for libel.
Lydon said no, you can only be done for libel by saying something about someone that isn't true.
