📝 New Manager [Luke Williams Appointed]

I’m just putting the final touches to it. Williamson scored highly, Parkinson a bit lower but then we have to consider squad strength/quality etc. It’s been a mammoth task to be fair. Also, I’m not sure if the company I’ve been doing it for are going to put a small charge on it. Either way, once it’s out there I’ll keep everyone updated on here and if necessary share some of the headlines.

Actually I’ve been that busy on this report I’ve not even updated everything on the Notts Stats website after the Grimsby game, mind you that’s not necessarily a bad thing!

Yes, Gateshead turned full-time professional in 2010 and remained so after the meltdown that saw them kicked out of tier 5 after finishing 17th, so you'd imagine they have better resources, they have a much better league record than Alty over the last decade.
Parkinson was Alty's first ever full-time manager and they've only just turned professional for next season.

I suppose you could make that a minus for Parky though, that he's only worked with part time players. Looks like he spent a decade at a couple of colleges - out of the game. Not clear what he did there but I'm guessing it had something to do with teaching mentoring and rehabilitating, which would be a plus for man management skills.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. I think Kings Lynn have a decent player who is also a financial advisor. So he's almost certainly making more money in his day job than he is as a footballer. I just can't believe these teams manage to compete against teams that are fully pro.

On the subject of the new manager, an interesting description on Wikipedia of the management style of John Askey as observed by certain players. A guy who likes to play good, attacking, passing football but has more than just a Plan A:

'Askey has a reputation for playing attractive football and for managing teams on a budget by spotting ability in young players and helping revive the careers of players whose careers had stalled. His favoured formation is a 4–3–3 and he prefers to play with a high-tempo, pressing style. Former player Adam Yates said that Askey was a hard working coach who was open to input from his players and did not hold a grudge; in terms of tactics he felt Askey was "quite fond of the three in midfield and three up top". Macclesfield and Port Vale defender Kieran Kennedy said that Askey liked to play passing football but also "he had a plan B, C and D which really helped us if we were up against it." Football agent Phil Sproson described Askey as "an attack-minded manager".'

If you were to write a profile for a manager who could keep the best aspects of Ardleyball and Burchball, but also address the perceived weaknesses of their approach, this description isn't far off!

Had a look at the betting odds and the names on there and it makes pretty grim reading, if we took a punt on Williamson or Askey I wouldn’t be disappointed. That’s if they’d come!

Judging by this article in the Torygraph, if any club can tempt Neil Warnock out of retirement (again) it wouldn't ever be Notts.
