I quite agree about there is arguably no Notts fan that is happy with us being in this league. The problem we have as well is that this league is a bit like a mini version of the premier league where there is the big six. We should always be challenging for top spot. Second and third playoff places at this level are the equivalent of the champions league places in the premier league.
A club of our size, resources and fan base should not be finishing any lower than 5th in my opinion. We should be able to put out one of the best and most competitive sides in non-league.
When 5th place in any league is the minimum and 1st is the expectation there is not much margin for meaningful progression or regression season on season. When you don’t win the title then you've only got 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th left.
For the first time we are probably experiencing a mini version of what Arsenal and Tottenham fans have experienced for years, and in recent times Man Utd. Not being good enough to win the title but always being up amongst them, with that extra missing.
So it’s hard to define progression or regression when you are operating to within a few places of a league table. In the grand scheme of the football pyramid we’ve finished the 95th, 97th and 97th best team in the country in the last three seasons. While we are down here the highest we can finish is the 93rd best. It’s such a small window we are operating in.
So parity has been achieved. For many the only real magnitude of progression on the field will be winning the title or getting promoted via the playoffs. Only then will it open up another twenty four higher places for us to progress to. Likewise failure to get in the playoffs would present itself
as a meaningful regression as it would be a new low in our history.
