Bread and Circuses.

Things officials in Roman times gave (eg bread) or presented (eg circus entertainment) in an attempt to please and distract disgruntled people.

The Roman poet Juvenal wrote--
"I really think this event is just bread and circuses to get us to stop protesting".

I hope the recent Press Conferences are not bread and circuses.
