Despite the 3-0 win, I’m not sorry that I didn’t go; I watched the Tour de France highlights and what highlights they were, also today. Racing up mountains in the Alps, they amaze me, pro cycling is the toughest sport in the World, the level of fitness required is unbelievable. Today saw a first TdF win for 22 year old Briton Tom Pidcock leaving the race leaders in his wake on an amazing climb up Alpe d’Huez and on one of the downhill sections, reaching speeds of up to 106 Kph! I am in awe!

There’s probably more testing for drugs carried out in cycling these days than most other sports. Also, there was widespread drug usage in many other sports, eg swimming and athletics, but it was the Lance Armstrong affair that really put the spotlight on cycling. The use of performance enhancing substances was widespread in professional cycling, especially in the big ‘GrandTour’ races such as The Tour and the Giro, right from the beginnings of the sport, primarily because those early races were not considered to be sporting events at the time; they were held as commercial ventures to sell bicycles and promoted by newspapers. Those early participants were almost exclusively from poor, working class backgrounds and a win in one of the prestigious cycling events would set the rider up for life and sell a lot of cycles for the brand. As the events were held to promote cycles sales, nobody gave a damn about what the riders took to help them get to the end of what were incredible tests of strength and endurance. Pro cycling has a very interesting history!
