Definitely - true for drink and true for some foods. Try not eating red meat for a week and then having a good steak. Heaven!
The drinking culture is strong in the UK and countries colonized by the UK but not so much outside. For example, if you visit someone in the evening here in Brazil it’s certainly not automatic to offer an alcoholic drink as in the UK.
I was born in the Scottish borders and I remember being given those big cut glass tumblers when visiting neighboring farmers with, no joke, a quarter bottle of whisky in! You’d be unlikely to see the bottom of the glass before you left too. In my Dad’s day they’d then all happily jump in their cars and drive home!
