As others have said does the objective of developing players for a profit (not something I'm against if it's not the whole team) count as success as opposed to going up? I'd rather go up and develop one or two players to sell every year than the whole team and stay in this division forever. Our last manager search wasn't a success as some turned it down, obviously managers are going to want to go up, not be hamstringed by having to make profits on most of the players. The longer we're down here the harder it's going to be to attract people. Will players and managers then use us as just a stepping stone for their careers whether we are successful or not? I'm abit worried about how this season will turn out.
It’s a great point about who we can attract. At the moment we are hoping to attract players desperate to prove a point having slipped through the net and generally find themselves in non league.
By getting promoted, you (in theory) are in a position to attract a better calibre of player.
Personally my opinion is that you hope to sign a handful of young players that can be improved and either sold on for a profit or stay with you as you rise through the leagues. The vast majority of the squad is then made up of players you know are consistent and good enough for the level you are at. Regardless of some (on here) views regarding experienced players, they are a must. Any squad needs players like JOB or Doyle… yes the legs might go, but the mind and leadership they bring doesn’t. Personally, I’d prefer the experience to be a CB where legs doesn’t matter.

Interesting points raised by CF, and one of the main ones will become more valid once we cash in on multiple players and not just Cal Roberts.

The approach may restrict (to some degree) who we sign but to date it hasn't restricted options on who we sell. It soon became apparent Wootton was going on a free transfer during last season (a common scenario throughout football), bar that we've had multiple bids for multiple players and only accepted one and made a profit. This again is likely to be common for any squad, unless you've got nobody worth selling with a year to go on their contract.

Brentford discovered a few years into their new approach that the higher in the league they were, the more their players were worth - a player appearing in their mid-table team was suddenly worth millions more when they made the playoffs. They also recognised that they were more likely to be in the playoffs if they had a mixture of youth and experience, but it took them a while to get the balance right.

For me, signing an “experienced” player means someone who’s 25-27 and has played plenty of games, not someone over the age of 30.

If (a big if) there was any disconnect between recruitment and coaching, then LW better stay in his lane. It must have been clearly spelt out to them on taking the job. Input is fine, but it ain't your decision or final say.

If they then didn't want to play and develop those recruited players, then they're only hastening their departures really.
Ardley wouldn't play Ruben and look what happened to him. It shows through in results sooner rather than later.

Having said that, I doubt anything of the sort is going on. Just the usual 'failed to win a couple' hysteria.

It’s more and more common now that clubs have a recruitment panel and in a couple of years I doubt many won’t. Why would you leave it to the one man who at a sniff of a better job would leave you or if they underperform you have to sack them and pay them off, recruiting players is the biggest cost to a football club and owners now want more control and rightly so I think.
I think the buying players to sell isn’t totally accurate. Their words were signing undervalued players. For example if Langstaff knocks in the same amount of goals as Mullen and you’re paying him a third of his wages it’s a pretty good way of doing things.

    What he said ^^^^^^^^

You argue with your boss, you lose the argument.

    You play Ruben.

Usually the 'hysteria' appears after a defeat but disappointing draws is a good enough excuse.

From those stats it seems like the coach knows more than some of our fans after all, and his post match interview was not as deluded as most believed.

Not to mention the number of positive comments about Notts from some Gateshead fans as well.

I just hope the ‘rumours’ regarding the dressing room issues are just that, rumours.

Agreed it's not a fact that this is going on with LW and also agree that it will have been made clear at the job interview. That's the role of the job which is why we're getting what might be deemed as great coaches. As I say I don't have anything against this as I want us to be financially secure and it's worked for others. I just don't want to stay here for that long we lose supporters or people's interest. Sometimes I think being Notts doesn't help, if we were a smaller club then maybe we could suprise a few people but expectation here is high and in the media we're always meant to be at the top. Can we cope with the pressure of this tag? I sometimes don't think we can handle being everyones so called big cup have especially at their ground. I would still have liked a couple of players signed like the CM who can pull the rest of the team up like JOB is meant to be doing now. We still need a keeper as well, I can't see Slocombe being the difference in games especially with our defence which still seems to panic, make mistakes and leave space. I never feel like we're making much progress. I thought IBs style was better to watch than Ardleys but still had its weak points. We can't seem to find a formula to look strong and hard to beat with good play on top.

I don't know the answers but I just want, after 4 years, to be able to put a realistic title challenge in.
