There have been reports Ukrainian forces have outnumbered the Russians by 8 to 1 in this offensive. Regardless of how well trained or equipped they are I find this a little hard to believe given how large Russia's army is and how much victory means to Putin.

I wonder whether the Russians are as incompetent as they appear, or whether they're falling back in the hope Ukraine overstretches it's supply lines so they're vulnerable to the counterattack before winter sets in.

I'm genuinely hoping it's because the Ukrainians have trained and mobilized a very large assault force and the Russians are just really cr@p and totally incompetent.

Unfortunately their long term strategies in both Africa and South America would suggest otherwise. This could be a long cold winter for many regardless of Putin preventing Russia's gas and oil flowing West.

Is Putin not dead yet! Must have a real grudge on the younger generation! Oh well at his age he should be dead in 20 years!

Not if he takes his shoes off when he returns to his dacha after a hard day of being a dictator, taking your shoes off at home is known for it's bullet proofing qualities. 'One' can be never be too careful so I'm told 😉 .

I have only seen that ratio applied by the Russian proxy in that area Gansha, who says it was outnumbered (Russia) by 8-1.
Possibly window dressing or as we might say, blatant lieing.

Have heard this morning from a work friend here, that in Poland some friends of his had been fighting in Ukraine for over four months in a techno driven group of interceptors of intell.
It had been specially set up to use technology to help in the war. These guys/gals are code writers as such. They have temporarily got leave from their jobs to go to Ukraine for this action. Russian soldiers are using their mobiles still because most communication lines are so bad that they don't even get proper chain of command orders unless the officers themselves physically bring them. Hard to believe, from a superpower.

But more and more over the last few weeks it has become quite tragic to listen too apparently. They are conscripts and they are from the far flung areas of the Federation and they are been encircled in Kherson. Officers have seemingly headed back to Crimea, leaving these guys with limited supplies and even less ammo.
One interception at the end of last week (I think Friday) seemed to indicate that there may even be a disengagement by Russians soldiers as a means of escape. Quite a lot of private phone conversations with girlfriends and wifes, with terrible conditions been suffered by the Russians.
Exasperation has turned to outright fear with news filtering through, with what is going on up North. One guy flipped out when he heard that the relief column supposedly on its way to Kherson from the Kharviv region, actually went straight back over the border to Russia.
So the Chechen leader has started to berate the Russian commanders in the field and is on his way to Putin to fill him in with the real facts from the front line.
It is all very chaotic and fear driven as they were not expecting their families in Crimea to have to now be moved back to Russia.
Possibly 25,000 Russian soldiers are slowly been encircled down the south with only retreat an option due to those HIMARs accurate strikes.

Despite all of Putin's boasting, Russian forces seem to either consist of Wagner Group thugs or else young conscripts with poor equipment and poor leadership. Small wonder morale is so poor. The Ukrainians are highly motivated because it is their land they are fighting for and now they have the weaponry to take the initiative. Too many of the Russian forces do not have the necessary motivation to be there so the West needs to ramp up their support now as pressure on Putin at home increases. Just hope that when all this is finally over he is held responsible for his actions and Ukraine gets the reparations and justices it deserves.

I don’t contribute much to this thread but one thing that does come to mind is the mind set of a losing Putin.

Pushing the big red button would seem to be an ever growing risk.

A fit of pique by a sociopath.

I think comrade Putin may have other things on his mind soon enough, other then pressing red buttons.
This is doing the rounds now on a wider base. May indeed be some truth in it. I think his days are numbered, similar to Saddam Hussein.

Councillors that called for Putin to be sacked face break-up of their local authority
A group of St Petersburg local politicians who called for Vladimir Putin to lose his job due to the war in Ukraine faces the break-up of their district council, one of the politicians has said.
Nikita Yuferev, a deputy in the Smolninskoye local council, said a judge ruled that a series of past council meetings are null and void, leaving it open for it to be broken up by the regional governor.
Another council member, Dmitry Palyuga, said the same court fined him 47,000 roubles (£680) for "discrediting" the authorities by calling for Mr Putin's removal.

Reuters could not reach court officials for comment.
Four more members of Smolninskoye council are due to appear in court in the next two days.
Last week, a group of deputies from the council called on Russia's Duma parliament to bring charges of state treason against Mr Putin and sack him, because of Russia's military losses in Ukraine and the damage to its economy from Western sanctions.
