Thread: If Truss Goes

  1. #31
On Russia's power in the energy supply market, the key question is how did we get here, because sure as sh1t concerns would have been raised as to how reliant Europe was/is on Russian gas & oil. Trump publicly did so, we've allowed ourselves to be out-flanked by a despot when we could and should have focused on renewables & nuclear power - too many tory donors throwing spanners in the works?

Totally agree WCV. Fatty Merkel who was chums with Putin takes no responsibility for her one stop shop with Russian energy or illegal immigrants pouring into the EU! Then there’s crazy Macron who says Putin should not be backed into a corner or their nukes won’t be fired back if they fire first. Incredible and some thought Boris was bad for numerous copas de vino tinto!

The easiest thing in politics today is to be a member of the opposition. You don't have to implement policies or make difficult decisions. You just sit there and criticise. Today, I watched various members of opposition parties being interviewed and asked what their policies would be if they were in power. Not one of them gave an actual answer but came out with generalisations which meant nothing. Starmer is a prime example of this, hence his nickname 'Mr. Hindsight'.

Now, none of the above is an excuse for the complete shambles that the Tory Party find themselves in. Liz Truss has been an absolute disaster. The point that I am trying to make is that the previous two years or so have been very difficult and whoever was in power wouldn't have found it easy. Like the Tories, they'd get some things right and some wrong. It looks like our next government will be Labour so it will be interesting to see how they boost our economy, like they say they will, as they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory the last time they were in power. It's all very well talking a good game but as the saying goes ' the proof of the pudding will be in the eating!'

And just when I find myself sat teetering on the fence considering actually voting Labour......onto my TV screen come Starmer saying nothing and Rayner saying nothing other than s l a g g I n g off.

Not one shred of an idea on how they’d improve things.

This pair are like blagging your way into a night out with Amanda Holden and then finding out it’s the wrong time of the month!

I understand why you say this Mick, Starmer is a terrible frontman - not too long ago I heard Rachel Reeves talk up a coherent economic plan which sounded sensible. All Starmer does is say Labour has a plan for this and a plan for that, but we rarely get the specifics, he is also quick to blame the tories for global matters outside of their direct control.

Labour are only so far ahead in the polls because of the current sh1tshow, a new centrist party is needed.

What annoys me about the Labour Party is how they blame the Tories for the financial mess that we find ourselves in yet when they were ousted from power, as they admitted themselves, 'the cupboard was bare!' An important point being that they didn't have to face the various world crises that the Tories have had to face over this period, yet they still bankrupt us. As I've said before, it"s easy to criticise when you don't have to make the decisions.

Having said this, it doesn't excuse the political mess that the Tories find themselves in

Spot on! It's always so much easier being the opposition as you can say what you would have done in all circumstances in order to please the masses...but it doesn't actually mean you would have done it!

I don't know how to respond to you as when I have disagreed with you previously you have said "you have really got it in for you", which I certainly haven't BTW.

But, just a quick question though given your comment about what Labour faced, do you believe the 2008 world financial crisis when there was a run on Northern Rock Bank and our behemoth banks like RBS nearly collapsed until Labour bailed them out was a minor hiccup in your world view and wasn't a drain on the public purse?

And yes I know Brown sold the gold cheap blah, blah, blah.

He did sell the gold for peanuts so I don’t understand why that’s “blah, blah, blah”?

I voted for New Labour under Blair but that decision was a poor one.

I always liked Alistair Darling, I though he did a great job through the 2008 financial crisis.

I thought he was a far better Chancellor and would’ve made a far better leader and PM than Brown.

It’s a shame that his time and people like Alan Johnston are no longer around.

    Starmer and Rayner FFS! 🙄😳😩

But, do you really believe Brown woke up one morning and got in his time machine to see future gold prices, comeback and then said fk it I'll sell it anyway so I will always be remembered for this "bad" decision and give my detractors a massive sh itty stick to beat me with, or could it have been the BoE and/or the numerous economic advisors told him, given the prevalent economic circumstances of the time we don't know about, and that it was an advantageous or even a ***** thing to do to pay for some of these bonds and gilts that needed paying?
