It is hard to be clear in the age of undisclosed fees, but it is estimated that only 47 transfers required a sum to be exchanged.
Burnley offered £2M+ for Wiles & Blackpool £1M for Barlaser, with a bit of forward thinking maybe sell Wiles and use the Money to part finance the deals for the other out of contract. Dan 1st obviously..........UTM.

Barlaser for example. Go back 12 month and offer him a contract. If at the time he was getting 4k in league 1. How much are you offering as a new deal? 5k,. 6k? 10k? If you offer 6k then 10k with promotion. What are you doing if he says no.?
Now what if he says yes? Are you offering the same to wiles, ogbene, Viktor. They all say yes. Brilliant we have 4 players on 10k per week for the next 3 years.... Now remove knowing they have turned out to be good championship players and all four are flops?

I know all the above is fictional but what if.
It’s just the same as what we had at the beginning of the season ? Recycled in a different package ! Amateurs trying to tell Professionals how to do their job, I will repeat what I-said then “ We are in the best situation we have ever been in “ ?

I’ve no confidence in our professionals when it comes to selling players. Cheap as chips .

If we keep our better players and strengthen in jan we have a good chance to be playing championship football next season. If we do neither it will make relegation more certain.

Mr Stewart runs a tight ship, some would say too tight, but this keeps us solvent, and prevents us ending up like so many other clubs.
Unfortunately, this strategy will mean its unlikely we will ever make the Premier league, but you never know.
So....we pay what we can afford without causing too much disparity within the wage structure, if means our better players leave for more money, then there's not a lot that can be done, we just have to keep unearthing gems and slowly progressing the club.

We can't compete with sheff wed nevermind for example Cardiff Blackburn etc

Unless we are comfy mid table than I agree
The table will be too compressed for us ,or anyone else, to be comfortable in January. If we sold 2 players to cash in and then hit a bad run that could easily lead to relegation. It would be one hell of a gamble because we wouldn't be able to demand that much for them anyway with their contracts a matter of months from expiry.Have to agree with what has already been said.......the value of staying in the Championship far out weighs any benefit from accumulating transfer funds.
