I'll ask again: If you were at a game and two people shouted at an opponent player - one said "You b******" and the other shouted "You black *******", do you personally feel that both insults are pretty much the same thing? Is that basically your opinion?
No, just the opposite, my point was that the level of “ upset” is entirely dependent on the sensitivity of the recipient

OK, but I'm curious as to why your making that point in relation to that particular insult? How does your point differ to an insult of any kind? Surely any insult is perceived differently by the sensitivities of the recipient. Why are you choosing to make this point in relation specifically to this racially based insult?

Just on past experience it was something that most on here would understand

    No other reason

    But just my opinion.
I think this is where interpretation gets a bit messy because I'm pretty sure if the word "black" was replaced by say "Welsh," "Scottish," "Yorkshire," etc hardly anyone would bat an eyelid.

I'm pretty sure that the phrase "you black *******" was (and probably still is) used as a derogatory term towards the colour of someone's skin rather than their actual parentage/origin.

I'm sure that's right which means perversely that, in terms of accuracy, the "black" bit is accurate but the "b******" bit probably isn't. Words eh!

Yep, I see what you mean. I could suggest that the power of the offensiveness is tied in to the respective access of these sub groups to power and privilege within the country they live in. But I won't.

    But you did 🙂.
I wasn't trying to be clever, just suggesting that the level of offence can be viewed differently depending on people's outlooks.

Singing "You're Welsh and you know you are" to Shrewsbury fans is disgusting 🙂
