A troublesome country could easily be Northern Ireland in the 70's , 80' and 90's .

The Catholics didn't all flee to the Republic and all the Protestants didn't come over here .
I agree with you that there is a difference between the two and that priority should be given to those fleeing persecution where their lives are genuinely at risk.

As the video you posted stated, there are many sound reasons why others should try to come over for economic reasons but I think most would want to work here to improve their lot. I have a lot of sympathy for them but if you had secure borders they could still apply to enter legally. If secure borders led to a sharp decline in illegals entering the country then there may be a quota still to allow a small amount of legal immigration due to such economic reasons. But we clearly do not have the capacity to take the vast numbers who might want to come.

It's surely hard to argue against the concept of secure borders. The problem, to me, is really around some of the consequences involved in achieving that.
