I remember both as a kid myself and also as a dad really enjoying several family evenings out at bonfire celebrations-getting wrapped up warm and enjoying hot dogs and doughnuts while watching the fireworks displays but, as my better half pointed out, it's weird that we are actually celebrating the torture and death of Guido Fawkes. Most kids know the rough story of the plot and what happened to him but somehow all that gets forgotten in the enjoyment of the night. Should we really be celebrating such a thing? In fact, I do recall that some Catholic groups had protested in the past to local councils and government about it.

When Fawkes was caught, in the early hours of November 5th, he was tortured to try and get him to reveal the names of his fellow plotters. Even the King was impressed by his bravery but, of course, he eventually succumbed. Luckily for him, Fawkes managed to escape the other delights planned for him by falling from the scaffold and breaking his neck. Didn't stop them quartering his body afterwards of course.

The very day Fawkes was caught-November 5th 1605- Londoners were encouraged to set bonfires to celebrate the King's escape and an Act of Parliament designated it a day of thanksgiving. From around 1650 fireworks began to be used and the "guy" was added a bit later-although this originally represented the Pope rather than Fawkes. You can see why some Catholics might be offended by the continuation of such celebrations!

All things change over time and it can be argued that more identify Fawkes now as a kind of rebellious folk hero and symbol of "Annonymous" rather than as a Catholic plotter who planned to blow up the King in the houses of parliament. The "V for Vendetta" film (based on earlier 1988 graphic novel) has probably popularised this view.

My dog has dementia now which oddly enough has lessened his firework fear. He’s going deaf (which helps) and quickly forgets which also helps.
