I don't think we wanted to keep Silky on our books, despite his late-season heroics at the end of 1994-95. I think the wage bill was getting out of control at the time, with Bosman affecting clubs of our size and financial clout more than anyone, and it was Ebbe from 99 onwards who was given the task of reducing the salary outgoings once the transfer fee income dried up. By then the financial damage had been done by Willie Miller, Aitken and Alex "****ing" Miller and some crazy fees paid for plodders. The last-mentioned (the ****) was most guilty, since the effects of Bosman were already known, and for the board to sanction the profligacy was near-suicidal.
