Thread: Watford match

I can't argue with that Untinted. I just hope that the next time he is picked the fans show him some love. And I think they will!

Sinkov you have been going a little longer than me (1964) so we have both seen our fair share of good and bad. It makes no difference where you watch at the ground or on TV all opinions must be respected and accepted. In respect of being one of the worst I think is very harsh, just think back to those periods in the 2rd and 4th division when the whole team was dire but we kept going despite how bad we were. I think we need to recognise how relative it is with now and then. The pressure in a successful side is greater due to good results and we cannot argue about the current phase we are in. There is no doubt he made a almighty mess up and it was his fault and he put pressure on the rest of the team but we do have to accept all players make mistakes but the best players simply make less unlike the team in the 60's, and you were lucky to see a team who won the league and had a suberb team and made the least mistakes - lucky you

It's not mistakes Lancaster, I don't think he made a mistake on Tuesday night, he just didn't know where he was, and not knowing whether he was in the penalty area or not, he decided he couldn't risk catching it. Not a mistake, just piss poor goalkeeping, a lack of basic goalkeeping competency. a keeper HAS to know where he is in relation to his area and his posts. And that's my problem with him, not mistakes, he just isn't a competent goalkeeper, I've seen numerous examples of it so far, not coming for crosses he should claim easily, indecision about whether to come for a cross or stay on his line, poor positioning, even the Watford goal, if you watch the replays carefully, after he's lost the ball he backs off and then starts to go left, when he should have been going right. Every time I watch him I get the distinct impression he doesn't really know what he should be doing, he's winging it.

Having said that, once we have possesion and start playing it out from the back, I reckon he's the best in English football, and you can include the PL keepers in that. There's a balance to be struck, and as we're top of the league, the balance clearly says his brilliance with his feet outweighs the fact that he's a piss poor goalkeeper, and Vinni has been justified in playing him. He's still one of the worst goalkeepers I've seen in 60 odd years of watching football though.

sinkov, my mate Ken, who you know, was a goalkeeper at semi-pro level and he agrees with you, as do I. Ken's opinion on Tuesday night was simply to ask why Muric dod not just catch the ball, there would have been no problem. There is no excuse for a keeper not to know exactly where he is because he has the whole field in front of him. It was an easy catch and he didn't make it and it cost the goal.
He has made some very good saves this season and his distribution has been excellent in the main, however, he always looks liable to make a mistake. Always a problem for a keeper which does not really apply to any other team member.

SS I have a different way of looking at this...It is us, who are not used to seeing a goalkeeper take risks and be willing to try and thread balls out into the midfield that brings the perception that he "always looks liable to make a mistake". First thing to enter most fans heads still is "BOOT IT" and "GET SHUT", then when he plays a sublime pass out, we come out from behind our hands and say "ahhh brilliant", look over to the mrs and say "this keeper is something else". We are nervous watchers. We therefore think he is "always liable to make a mistake". It is just a general fans nervous preconception.

I think that is just human nature to think that especially as we are not used to it. It is like when a car changes its shape, no one likes it. Eventually though people prefer the new shape and suddenly in time the old shape looks really dated.

We need to realise we are transitioning to an exciting modern way of playing

I think we should leave this thread now and just all agree that any outfield player makes a mistake and it's almost a given that he will, it is quickly forgotten.

Problem for the Goalkeepers' Union is if they drop a bollox it usually concedes a goal and the crucifixion is immediate and unforgivable.

    Onwards & forwards.

And the 4 is the number of our skipper, Corky be his name, and this evening he will make his 250th appearance for the Clarets....

    Shouldn't he be the Jack?
