As a side note. Wasn't Pavis an opponent to the increase in substitutions because it meant he would have to pay out extra money on appearance fees and bonuses?

As legs said it’s much much quicker now. Players are technically monitored now and I would hazard a guess then they either got injured from not spotting it or just continually played with the injuries, wouldn’t have mattered so much then because it was same for everyone. You have to believe medical science is correct and what LW is fed is the truth.
Would be interesting to find out what were the average distances covered by players in the 70s just as a reference.

Was a bit sad and looked up and saw one article suggesting it was almost triple now to back in the 70s, pitches wouldn’t have helped but shows how much players have changed over the years.

That’s a crazy stat - I remember reading that Bernardo Silva runs about 11 kilometers per game. Nowadays it’s all about athleticism, especially the higher up the leagues you go.

Watching games from the 80s can feel like watching a game in slow motion, to say nothing of all the time-wasting of passing the ball back to the keeper.

So true nw6, I watched a bit of one of those Big Match Revisited the other day from circa 1983/84 and it was painfully slow now looking back. Obviously didn't feel it at the time in the 80s

Without doubt pass back rule along with the playoffs are the best two introductions to our game during my time as a football fan.

No way of knowing of course, but I reckon a decent national league side from the present day would hammer a first division team at the peak of their powers from the 70s or possibly even the 80s.

It’s a different sport from the one of 40-50 years ago.

100%. Fitness is huge and the lack of professionalism back then in terms of diet and training would more than cancel out the technical differences.

I was re-listening to an episode of Quickly Kevin 90s Football podcast and they were talking about what teams used to have for pre-match and Man United players in the early 90s would supposedly have cooked spaghetti on toast with no sauce. Vile.

A simply fantastic and at hilarious podcast. So glad a mate introduced it to me a couple of years ago. So many great memories from the 90s

No doubt that fitness levels now are way above those required in the 70s, but much of the reduced mileage was about tactics. In those days, defenders defended and attackers attacked. Unless it was a corner, seeing any of the back four in the opposing half rarely happened, same as seeing attacking players in your own half. All sports have made massive advances, not just football.

Natural ability is still priceless, and for what it's worth I'm convinced that if Don Masson had been born 50 years later he would still have starred at the very top level.
