League One Club Sheffield Wednesday - Reduction of Fans in Leppings Lane End

League one club Sheffield Wednesday have had a reduction to the number of fans
allowed in the Leppings Lane end of the Hillsborough ground.
The capacity is reduced from 4,700 to 3,700 after there was a crush in the game
against Newcastle United in the FA cup third round in January 2023.
Newcastle United fans complained about over crowding in the game, after a review
was launched into the safety of the leppings lane end, by Sheffield City Council,
Police Authorities, & Abulance services.
So the capacity was reduced from 4,700 to 3,700 in the leppings lane end.

This comes 34 years after 97 Liverpool fans were killed at the stadium.

Had it happened today it would have been demolished simply as respect to those that lost their lives there, similar to what they do with schools in the US after a shooting. Somebody ought to tell them that getting guns under control would be a much better option

The central aisle in the lower tier is lined out with plywood thereby making it much narrower
How does that make it safer and how has that sports facility had a safety certificate approved

This is probably the most cost effective and quickest solution given were in the middle of a season. The stand was designed/built for an era when we had different fan dynamics to deal with. Agree that either a major remodelling/opening up of it, seating or a.n.other solution. Wonder if the lining with ply was to avoid crush injuries against metal and 'spread the impact' over a wider surface (though seems like taking paracetamol to cure a severe illness approach)

Sheffield Wednesday FC have now appealed against the reduced capacity imposed on them.

They need the money I suppose, rather than playing safe
