Plenty of dangerous- if not downright unsavoury- heads of state at the moment besides Putin such as Modi in India, Kim Jong-un in North Korea, Netanyahu in Israel and Xi Jinping in China but, of all of them, Jinping is probably the least reckless. Yes, he has increased his authoritarian hold on his own country as well as expanded control and influence in Africa and anyone who does not see China as a potential threat to Western interests is deluded but China's economy remains not only very reliant on exports to the West but also on imports of iron ore from Australia as well as wheat. Much of China is still very much undeveloped in terms of agriculture, industry and commerce. The relationship between China and the West is very symbiotic and this situation is not likely to change anytime soon. For all his sabre rattling over Taiwan Jingpin knows this. I don't doubt that both sides will attempt to source what they need from elsewhere and wean themselves off this inter-dependency but it will take time. Plus, as we all know, money talks and most governments will always try and ignore the more unsavoury aspects of other countries if dealing with them benefits them financially.
