    Winning mindset

    verses ball skills

    What should our coach prioritise?

I think that over a career, ball skills and tactics can be taught, to a level, but you can't motivate without a winning mindset.

    Thoughts?

I think that some people are inherently more driven and competitive than others and this is likely just as much a case of nurture than nature in how they have been brought up. But the problem can be that these individuals can be selfish and not exactly team players and football is a team sport.

Obviously ability is important and this is generally a result of a mixture of natural talent and hard work but attitude is also key. Football is no different in this than any other team sport or anything in life that requires working as a team. Part and parcel of any management role is motivation and this in itself is quite a complex skill to master especially when dealing with a group of people rather than just an individual but another aspect of being a manager is being able to deal with underperformance and confrontation. In football this can mean dropping players if necessary.

The most successful teams (whether in sports or any other sector) tend to have some star performers with both talent and drive but they still rely on others in the team to do their job and I would say that attitude/mindset is key to this. I think the old adages of a team being "more than the sum of their parts" or "as strong as their weakest link" still hold true. A team that works well together and makes the most of each others strengths can still achieve without top quality players.

Clearly there needs to be the appropriate level of fitness and footballing skills. Thereafter tactics, style and motivation should be led by the coach. Finally, but absolutely essential is ATTITUDE.

I've mentioned this for decades. We HAD a winning mindset some weeks ago but this club doesn't hold on to anything. You need skill AND a winning mindset. Carlos has proved he has the mindset but we need leaders on the pitch and we have too many followers. Its been that way practically since the mid 70's. Hence "I've been saying this for decades"

Mindset? Griffiths over Palmer FFS! He needs the Billy Bollox to recall the best keeper by a country mile! The defenders clearly are lacking confidence with Griffiths and hopefully the lump of lard up front will do something!! A young Gayle or Odemwingie he’s not!! Not even a HRK who at least held the ball up and ran the channels!
