Congrats on a well deserved, comfortable 3 points. The difference showed yesterday in quality, fitness and squad depth really. You guys are clearly a very very good side and in my opinion, the best team in the league. I know Wrexham are top and good luck to them if they see it through at the top however, I would much rather face them in any form of one off game than yourselves.
I though 1st half we were fairly good in general, the high press was working at times (when you did play out of it you were dangerous picking the gaps but didn’t seem to be on it in the final third) but our front 3 were far from on it today and your solid back line never really looked under threat.
2nd half was clearly a different story. You made the pitch look so big. The slick passing at times and how your players created their space was something other teams just don’t seem to do and it seemed so effective. A couple of very nice goals were more than deserved.
We are unfortunately missing some key players (granted, the starting line up yesterday was pretty much full strength) and the 3 you brought on just seemed to fit in and keep the levels up. I’m both jealous and impressed at the same time! We just had no threat to come off the bench, so as soon as you scored your first, we were never getting anything from the game unfortunately.
I know Austin got MOTM and 2 goals and a great performance deserved it but that performance from John Bostock was something else. The way he sat in front of the back line, didn’t really move much, broke up play, got the ball and immediately played the right pass 99% of the time was an unfortunate joy to watch. One of the best under the radar performances I’ve seen from a player for many a year.
I genuinely hope Wrexham find a way of dropping enough points and you get the title, however I just don’t see it now unfortunately but if you do get to the playoffs, I can’t see anyone beating you the way you set out 2nd half yesterday.
If we meet again I hope you have an off day, however, best of luck if we don’t meet in the playoff final and if that is the case, I hope you rightfully go up.
Thanks WF, nice post and you looked dangerous yesterday especially in the first half. Your progress this season has been great to see. Good luck for the rest of this season and next.
I can't see Wrexham not going up automatically now either and as you say well done to them. Personally I wish they could have done it more graciously without the gamesmanship but that's Parkinson and Mullins for you. Their owners seem like respectful people though so if they do become champions then good luck to them.
This current team would be somewhat off the pace in aiming for promotion from league two imo. We’d need serious defensive improvements to the squad if we were going to challenge - all hypothetical of course! Rawlo, Cameron, Bajrami and even Baldwin would struggle in League 2. Brindley and Chicksen, playing as conventional RB and LB would be ok I think. We’d also need a new goalie…..irrespective of what league we are in.
Very gracious post WF, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
My hotel internet in Singapore bombed out right after the second goal and so I missed the third, but otherwise it was a fun watch.
Unfortunately I feel it’s going to end how it is now tbh. Chesterfield probably have the easier run in now and their comeback yesterday was a real killer for us. If Eastleigh held on yesterday we could afford the loss against you so it’s a pretty big hit now that.
Daly is probably our most talented player and I think would be wasted at LWB. I also just think he will be a league player next season, with it without us (and I don’t think we are winning the playoffs so think it will be without us unfortunately!)
In terms of who we play in the playoffs, I don’t honestly think it matters. We have a mixed bag of results against most of the teams in and around it and as we all know, who knows what can happen in one of games. I wouldn’t mind playing Barnet, for some reason I just can’t stand that club and fan base so beating them would be quite nice.
For us this is playoffs for the first time ever in this league and realistically we are punching above our weight. I’ll enjoy it and look at next season as a real push for promotion.
In that case, you'd probably be going there in the semi. Could you beat them?
Not being cheeky, but I think most of our fans would like to see you again at Wembley!
Yeah players that quick and direct are usually snapped up by the EFL. Wiki says he played defender a few years ago so I can't help thinking what a upgrade a 23 year-old like that would be for us at wing-back. His scoring record doesn't suggest he's an out-and-out striker.
The transformation between now and just over 12 months ago when the sides met at Woking is incredible.
We've improved clearly, but the Cards are almost unrecognisable the atmosphere at the club, the appointment by the relatively new owners in Sarll has been inspired. No wonder attendances are up and definitely punching above your weight.
I wouldn’t fear them but at the same time would have them down as decent favourites. We beat them away 3-1 and they won at ours 1-0 (battered us 1-0 really).
Daly in the first half of the season was unstoppable, felt like he’d score every time he played. Then had an injury that changed things a bit, he’s still one of those players that when he gets the ball, you feel like something will happen. We also signed Rhys Browne from Wealdstone who has been unbelievable and that’s changed Dalys role a little as he’s now not our main attacking threat like he seemed to be early on. Our system of a consistent 4 at the back has worked well in general so I can’t see that changing under the current manager but I take your point about him playing there previously, I’ve just never seen it so can’t judge him on that really.
