Sadly, mine is mostly down to working nights and my shift pattern that sometimes sees me in for 2/3 nights, off for the next then back in again. My boss tries to get us all at least 2 nights off together but with staff cuts/ workload it isn't always possible. Does play havoc with my body clock though! Mind you, don't know anyone on nights who gets a proper sleep and most lucky to get 5 hours straight. Can't be good for you. Only work p/t now as I stepped down to help my son who has AS and better half who has fibro. so days when I'm not on shift are pretty full.

As for insomnia, the older I've become the more I seem prone to it. I do stuff like avoiding eating too late, trying to relax with a book beforehand and always sleep with the window open (I'm luckily in a rural/coastal area so quiet-until the dawn chorus!&#128512 but doesn't always work. Problem is, after what seems like hours of lying there you decide to read or watch something and before you know it's nearly 4 o'clock! Listening to music sometimes helps but oddly can't get on with those "relaxing/help you sleep" background noise/music things you find on youtube.

Agree with Mick that a big factor in insomnia is often stress and I've certainly had times in the past where I've lain awake at night mulling stuff over but think the main cause for me now is my shift pattern which puts my body clock all over the place for too many days a week.
