Jimmy Anderson won’t get better conditions. Though I kind of hope we start with Woakes and Wood. Both have looked in good order in this test. I suspect it will be the predictable Broad/Jimmy partnership

Sadly Jimmy's not even looked vaguely threatening. Surely there must have been better alternatives available?

Anyhoo, eventually we got our Moe-Joe working, (pun intended).

Probably not a bad time to call it a day. New ball is important and the outfield being wet will nullify that.

No sign of play yet today. Rainfall radar shows a big bank of rain rotating around the north of England and moving nowhere.

That's what you get for staging international cricket matches in rainy Manchester. If it had been at Trent Bridge we'd have play.

Would it kill the cricketing authorities to bring the game into the 21st century and make a couple of extra days available in case of rain to avoid non-results like these? England have done their bit to make test match cricket more modern/attractive, now it's the authorities turn to show willing.

Absolutely agree, it's crazy that the weather can decide who wins the ashes by it ending in a drew!

I think it is one of the beauties? of cricket that the weather can play a part in the result. Would you/we be thinking like this, if it was England/us that only needed a draw to retain the Ashes. No one is more peed off than me, but I don't think it is right to make provisions for extra days, if weather intervenes, it's just not cricket.

The issue is the amount of fixtures they cram into the schedule.

I mean its ok we can all look forward to the pointless franchise slogfest in August called The Hundred, the comp the ECB seems to love.

End of the day the stupid decision to declare first day of the series has now comeback to bite us and Stokes has to wear that.

I think there was a bit more to it than that, legs. It's fine lines, and it would not have looked stupid if we had nicked a couple out.
