Thread: O/T:- The Ashes 2023

Which young spin bowler (who had played less first class games than Rehan) started his test career with figures of 1-150 off 45 overs.

    Did it ruin him?

Sorry for having a different opinion to you Don_O, you win.
Pleased that England were not bowled out last evening so that the Aussie openers will have to come out and field for a short while, instead of having a focus purely on batting when they woke up. It would be nice to se Jimmy and Broady, put on a few more this morning, as although the stats regarding fourth innings chases at the Oval are in our favour, many of those innings will have been played on wearing fifth day pitches, not on a fourth/fifth day pitch.

    Broady's final game then?

No issue Magpies1959,.I just don’t like things like “ruining” youngsters being trotted out. It’s actually very patronising to these young players to assume they are mentally not adequate don’t you think? I’m not assuming it’s a snowflake aimed comment either, it’s been trotted out for many decades, and there is little evidence to back it up. They are either good enough or not. Age at either end of the spectrum shouldn’t matter.

I agree entirely. Great for Broad and Anderson too. Let’s see if Moeen can prove me wrong with a 5-fee to win the game. Or not…..

Definitely not a snowflake comment lol about Raheen. I think Moeen is wonderful cricketer but a little frustrating, he can be brilliant with both bat and ball, but lacks consistency. He also seems a perfect fit for the England model, for as Crawley says, this England set up picks players on what they can achieve on a good day rather than an on their averages.

Yes gump, Broad announced his retirement last night. He also finished his test batting with a six of the last ball he faced and remained not out. He also hit the fifth most sixes in Test matches of any England player.

And I was very much a fan of Ali, two years ago. And quite surprised he wasn’t encouraged to stay.

I can fully understand Crawley’s comment, it relates directly to him more than any other player and his success this series imho.

How it relates to a guy who hasn’t played a test match for 2 years I’m less convinced.

It looks to be a spin friendly pitch. So we’ll see if he has “any” of his best days, he’s yet to show that at all this series and he been significantly out bowled by a part timer and a young spinner for Australia who has played only a little more cricket than Rehan. Australia obviously think he isn’t going to be ruined by playing against the most aggressive batting attack in test cricket. Despite his inexperience.

Not sure if you have read about or seen this now.
Smith was run out in the first innings with bairstow whipping his bails off...painfully I know !..
However the 3rd umpire said not out because the bails had been dislodged before bairstow whipped them off...! They hadn't as replays showed.
I Think the Aussies went on to make another 4o odd runs..!

Hopefully the rain will save us as it's men against boys out there. Throwing our last 5 wickets away, like confetti at a wedding is deffo begin to look like a bad idea.
