    Oppenheimer

Just back from watching this with my son. Not a perfect film but IMHO deserving of many of the plaudits it's had. The first third of the film I admit to finding a little slow but then this sort of prepares the ground and so would maybe be difficult to shorten in terms of over all balance. The last two thirds draw you in more. Whilst there are well executed larger scenes, much of the movie is spent on confined interior scenes but anyone who has ever watched "Twelve Angry Men" can see that flashy CGI or impressive location shoots are not necessary for engaging drama.

The top notch cast (which is quite large) are uniformly good but you can see why actors want to appear in Chris Nolan movies even if given small supporting roles. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are particularly good as the main characters but Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh amongst other A-listers are all very good.

I knew some of the story if not all but won't give any spoilers away. Well acted with good dialogue and cinematography it also raises the moral questions around developing and then using the bomb without doing so in a heavy handed way. Like the "Irishman", "Oppenheimer" proves that a 3 hour movie doesn't have to feel like 3 hours. Anyone else seen this ?

As for me, next on his list are "Barbie" 😁 and Mission Impossible.....

I have been waiting for this film since it was announced, and hope to see it this weekend.

    Great director and cast.

Having been to both Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the peace museum at the latter, I saw the melted tyres on the kids bikes that showed the devastating consequences of little boy being dropped from the Enola Gay.

Terrible events, but without it the Japanese would still be fighting.

A necessary evil, it could be argued.

Though the horrors of the use of the bombs are obviously touched on, it is generally done in a rather obliquely "less is more" way which -I believe- is a more effective way of doing so. As the title implies, the film's focus is on Oppenheimer himself but won't go into details as you've not seen it yet. Despite it's length, think you will enjoy it. Nolan is a genuinely great film maker and the cast are very good.

As for the use of the bomb, I agree with you that it was likely a necessary evil as the Japanese mentality of fighting on would have meant a prolongment of the war and the loss of many more American lives in an attempt to take the country. The dropping of the second bomb was, perhaps, more debatable. Once the genie is out of the bottle you can't put it back in though and the movie also touches on this issue within the context of the time as America views Communism and Russia as the new threat following the defeat of Nazi Germany and the Cold War kicks off.

I think I may just go see the new Barbie movie, just to see what that woke agenda narrative is we’re being pushed towards this time. Lol

I really want to see Oppenheimer and how Cillian performs in this role, he’s such an underaged actor.

Anyone else heard of the film ‘Sound of Freedom’? Apparently this is the film gaining in so much popularity in the states but they are suppressing it in media outlets and i’m guessing they will when it comes out here. It’s very controversial for the damning revelations about child abuse in showbiz, politics.. every
where. One to look out for. Don’t believe the media negativity/dismissing around it.

Haven't heard of that film Regis, but we watched Oppenheimer last night and it was great, but a bit too long.

The cast were great, and I would not be surprised if CM got an Oscar.

Any fans of CM should check out some of his earlier stuff like the Wind that Shakes the Barley and the underrated sunshine.

I’m pretty sure it’s being watched very widely in the states but not getting the attention in media as it should. Very suspect. I’ll be watching it when it gets released here in UK and I think it will be on Amazon.

From what (admittedly quite little) I have read/seen I think that one of the problems for the film has been it's tapping into the whole right wing , anti-abortion Christian movement . Certainly nothing wrong with the courage to tackle child grooming/slavery gangs but this other narrative -though popular with many conservatives in the US- does not sit well with many of the big studios or streaming companies. As part of the endorsement of the right to free speech however, I think that Netflix and Prime for example should show it and allow viewers to make up their own minds.
