You get a reminder from the authorities, and complete a simple online form.

You lose nothing if you don’t apply, in fact I think that counts as a deferment, in which case a rate of interest is applied to deferred payments until a formal application is made. You can also choose to defer if you are lucky enough to be able to afford it, and interest is added to this until you choose to take it.

Forget the “scaremongering”.

One auditor that used to visit us was 74, and was proud of the fact at he’d never claimed his pension, and continued to work. He’ll die before he gets the entitlement.
