My view is Gladstone Guest was a far better player than either of your comparisons who couldn't even begin to lace his boots, so put that in your pipe and jolly well smoke it.
I never saw Guesty play but grew up hearing the stories about that classic team and undoubtedly the likes of Guest, Ardon, Burke, Grainger and Danny Williams were very much a cut above although I'd imagine that only Ronnie Burke was remotely comparable in terms of the kind of player.
Dave Watson, when he played up front, for us, might be a better comparison and anyone who remembers would tell you that neither Hugill or Smith are a patch on Dave Watson.
They're not my comparisons - I just added my 2 pennorth - it seems strange that everyone is Ok with comparing Hugill and Smith as long as you subscribe to the nonsense about Hugill being better than Smudge but then everyone suddenly had a problem with me comparing them, because I haven't been drinking the Hugill Kool-aid?

Do you read what MT says? Hugill has been carrying an injury for some time. Am I surprised? No with the way he play often getting battered including the push resulting in a yellow card for hand ball. Unbelievable Jeff!

Both give 100% but I'd be amazed if stats don't show Smudge covering more ground
Smudge had a deceptive turn of pace, Hugill is deceptively slow
Smith was generally better at winning aerial challenges
Smith made more and better quality runs - this helped Smudge be a better provider (he was actually a really good crosser of the ball) whereas Hugill's career stats average one assist per season

Hugill not fit to lace Smudge's boots
Not fit to lace Kelly's either

Are we going to have this ridiculous cart hippophilia when Hugill scores once every 6-7 games?
You missed out the main fact of a striker.
    Smith 19 championship goals
    Hugill 56 championship goals.
Note to smith. Stop running about a lot

Well it'll probably be the same as when Smith was playing in the Championship and had several games between scoring goals. Admiration for the 100% effort and respect for the work he did around the box. Neither are "fox in the box" strikers but both contribute a lot to overall play.

By the way, I don't think people have an issue with you thinking Smith is better than Hugill, your post makes some excellent observations about the (often underappreciated) quality that Smith brought to our team. But you're the one accusing people of talking "utter tripe" and making comments like Hugill not being fit to lace Smith or Kelly's boots. I mean come on, maybe it was tongue in cheek but it came across like something Alan Partridge or David Brent would say!

Seeing as I started this, I think Smiths overall contribution was greater, even in the championship.
I have no problem with Hugill, unlike some on her, after all he's our player, I was well chuffed when scored, just wish he would do it more often.
