I have no problem with Hugill, unlike some on her, after all he's our player, I was well chuffed when scored, just wish he would do it more often.
    I’d agree with that.

By the way, I don't think people have an issue with you thinking Smith is better than Hugill, your post makes some excellent observations about the (often underappreciated) quality that Smith brought to our team. But you're the one accusing people of talking "utter tripe" and making comments like Hugill not being fit to lace Smith or Kelly's boots. I mean come on, maybe it was tongue in cheek but it came across like something Alan Partridge or David Brent would say!
Apologies for 'tripe' but in the context of the flak I've copped on this thread, that was just meant as banter but rebuke accepted - mind you, I'm slightly flattered by the Alan Partridge simile so maybe it is me that's wrong.....
I really don't rate Hugill (in case you couldn't tell) and it frustrates me that our manager does
it frustrates me even more that our manager doesn't seem to rate Georgie
It worries me that our manager rates Nombe to the extent of us paying nearly a million quid
it also worries me that our manager doesn't seem to rate JJ

But I guess that much is already more obvious than a David Brent gag....

    100%

    Spot on

Love Hugill when he scores - but not to the extent that it blinds me to his shortcomings, especially when he doesn't score, especially when his career stats average one assist per season.....

When Hugill went off on saturday it made, certainly myself, realise just what it will be like when he isn't playing. None of our other strikers can hold a ball up like him, the new lad Nombe looked pacey so he would be looking to play off a hold up player or for flick ons or balls played through, and kelly is similar. Eaves can win headers but cant hold a ball up under pressure and JJ isn't a central striker and isnt strong enough anyway. All in all we would miss Hugills presence up front IMO and I really hope he stays fit as I think he is integral to our system. UTM

Agree that we don't have anyone else who can hold the ball under pressure but Kelly, Green, Fred, JJ and from what I've seen Nombe run channels and break at pace - that's when we look best
We shouldn't be looking to play it to Hugill (or anyone else) to hold up, we should be building through midfield or breaking at pace
It seems to me that there's a disconnect between Hugill and the rest of the players that we've got
If you remember the Dave Gwyther days - Gwyther was a decent player, with outstanding upper body strength, but his game was about holding it up - it was totally the opposite to the likes of Finney, Crawford & Phillips who wanted to run at and past defences - if you remember, we ended up playing Big Dave in midfield before moving him on to Newport where he fitted in much better....

I remember the Dave Gwyther days very well Walt, and a great player ha was for us, but like I said i think Hugill is integral to how we play and when we are under the cosh we need someone who can hold the ball up so we can get our quicker players up in support.I certainly agree with you regarding breaking at pace but when we have been under pressure this season we haven't kept the ball, certainly 2nd half, as well as I'd like if we are going to clear the ball we need Hugill to keep it for us and at the moment he's the only one that can do that. Still ignores the fact that Hugill is injured but still plays

    A Ha!

Hugill certainly has a few shortcomings there's no doubt about that. The one that frustrates me is when he tries to win a free kick unnecessarily, when it would have been easier and better for us to play on. The standout example was in our rearranged game against Cardiff. He broke free and was charging towards the goal, the defender was closing in but still had work to do. It seemed like two more paces he'd be in the box and one on one with the keeper. But then he flung himself to the floor, there was clearly no contact and the ref rightly didn't even consider it. It made no sense at all other than he bottled it and thought we'd have a better chance from the set piece but the dive was laughable.

I just feel we'll see an improvement this season. With players like Green, Fred and Cafu supporting him I believe it'll bring the best out of his game and we'll see a better return. I could be wrong but time will tell.

I love Georgie but I'm not sure if it's a case of Taylor doesn't rate him or he can't stay fit long enough to make a regular stamp on the team. As for JJ, well we've signed him for another year so lets hope we see what he can really do at Carlisle this season. I'm definitely glad we didn't sell him
