I was in the CCF (Combined Cadet Force) when at school, it was compulsory, and we used WW2 style 303 rifles, blanks were used on our exercises and we also had a Bren gun but blanks wouldn’t work in those, so we used a football rattle instead; it doesn’t sound much like a machine gun, though!
