Today, 59,042 watched Arsenal Women beat undefeated Chelsea Women 4-1. The last time women’s football was as popular, the FA’s response was to ban it.

A fews back they played at home against Man City in front of just over 3,000

Sorry but Stuart Broad is just as much "one of our own" and deserves it far more. However we all know who will tick most of the woke BBC boxes.

Trying to guilt people into supporting your candidate is perhaps the worst tactic there is. I will be looking to vote for someone else just because of what you have posted. Womens football is so over hyped it's laughable I couldn't care less about it and just because it was banned over 100 years ago has nothing to do with anything.

Should we throw our support behind a male player because all football was banned in 1314 by Edward II "...there is great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls from which many evils may arise which God forbid; we command and forbid, on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city in the future."?

To sum up this thread so far, it’s the BBC who’s to blame for Mary Earps being favourite to win SPOTY even though it’s bookies who set the odds and the public who vote for it.

Also anyone who votes for her instead of Stuart Broad hasn’t got a brain even though everyone has access to the channels Earps regularly appeared on and the vast majority don’t have the channels Stuart Broad appeared on.

Yeah, there's a lot of wibble in this thread. It's a public vote for something that's never made a lot of sense to me. I don't really understand what the criteria are... part of it seems to be around achievement, partly around 'personality', partly... something else.

People could and should vote for who they like, if they can be bothered to do so.

I'm not quite sure how I'd even begin to compare Mary Earps' achievements in the context of her sport with Stuart Broad's achievements in the context of his sport. They're both great candidates and would be worthy winners.

I think the 'personality' part is a bit overblown. It's half about sporting success and half about capturing the nation's imagination.

It’s certainly beyond my comprehension that you’ve tried to compare a medieval king banning a sport resembling football to the current governing body banning women from playing actual football in the 20th century.

Remember when that thug Giggs won it ? What for playing for Utd for over 20 years ....he did nothing that year.

Mind his image is in tatters now thanks to his own actions.

Broad on the other hand is a worthy winner of SPOTY for me an absolute legend of the game a winner on the pitch and really nice guy off the pitch.

I must admit that I started this thread after seeing that Mary Earps was the odds-on favourite for the SPOTY award. As she is from West Bridgford, I thought it would be a good idea to vote for her. I must admit I had no idea who the other candidates were.

As a season ticket holder at Trent Bridge for almost 60 years, I’m one of Stuart Broad's biggest fans. I think that he should be nailed on for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
