Thread: The National Anthem.

  1. #1

    The National Anthem.

The Scots and Welsh won't sing it, half the English don't know how to sing it and the Northern Irish belt it out but we can't understand it.

Now Bristol University have started a furore because they won't play it.

Just bin it and play the "Best of the Beatles" instead.

Who wants to sing the dirge for this knobhead?

Whilst I am neither a monarchist nor a republican, the national anthem for any country strikes me as an anachronism.

Apart from “God save the King” being a dirge, how is it relevant any longer. No one, surely, believes in the divine right of kings anymore. Judging by the polls, I don’t think many people wish King Charles to “long reign over us”.

The question is: what would replace it? Taylor Swift seems to dominate at the moment. One of her songs?

Adopt, '' Land of Hope and Glory'' as the National anthem. ''I would not sing 'God save the King.'' or Queen !

Just don't bother replacing it with anything. Let the Scots carry on with their Flower of Scotland, the Welsh with Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and the Northern Irish with The Londonderry Air and we'll just do wthout.
At least that will stop all the other nationalities and a lot of English people booing when it is played. Easy answer really.

I don’t know when you were last there. I was there last week. Believe me, it is no longer a land of either hope or glory.

Swiss ! But '' Land of Hope and Glory'' that's encouragement. That's the start to build a great country ,mind you it may take some 50 years, 150 years ,with hope? But we must start somewhere and no time like ''Now!!'' ( PS: I might have been there some 50 years ago !!) Maybe those 'meat and potato' pies at our corner shop I do miss?

I agree Balan. However the feeling I got is that all hope is lost. A terrible Tory Government is about to be replaced by a Labour Government. Meanwhile the country has gone down the tubes.

Not too much cause hope, sadly.

Who cares what the Welsh Scot’s or Irish think.

I don’t know what it is that upsets you so much about the royal family - I’m firmly behind the monarchy - we’re all about history and interest over hundreds of years and all you want to do is throw it all away and be like the yanks with no history at all.

More negative *******s - to pile up with the rest of the negativity around this country.
