That’s the sort of question that leaves you gobsmacked and short of a quick witty reply, only to think of one 5 minutes later

Proud to be from Rotherham and Yorkshire, lived in Barnsley for almost 10 years, and the locals often say "You're not from Barnsley are you ?".
Which I always take as a compliment.

I’m proud to tell anyone that I’m from Rotherham. There are many more people that look out for our results. There have been 8 of my French friends that have have toured our town and enjoyed the hospitality given.

Yes if an American is abroad and is asked where they are from they will invariably name their City rather than the country.
Arrogantly thinking everyone has heard of their town.
The last one to do this that I met was from a minor town in Michigan and couldn’t believe I’d never been there last alone heard of it.

I always ask Americans what part of Canada they are from which invariably causes confusion and dismay in equal measures

    Twice.

First one was not an outright denial but I hid the fact I was a Millers fan going to the match.

Before the Swansea game at Millmoor when the Swansea fan lost his life. I got surrounded by about 12 gruesome looking Swansea thugs at the bottom.of Ship Hill. One of them asked ' Where the **** is the Red Lion?' I didn't have any colours on and I thought I have got to get the tone right for my reply or I am gonna get decked here. I gave them directions in an accent that came out sounding like a cross between Terry Thomas and Leslie Phillips. It worked. They just walked off scratching their heads thinking I was some eccentric toff.

Second time I went to watch Yorkshire play at Trent Bridge. A few days previous a big revelation came out about the grooming scandal in Rotherham. I sat next to a Huddersfield town fan who asked where I was from. I said
    ' outskirts of Sheffield '

Got to admit, I felt dreadful about doing that
