Forgive that some of the formatting went astray, (even more when I actually posted the message!) but you get the drift I hope!
All have 6 home and 6 away matches in the league. Ipswich are out of the FA cup, with a consequently more simple fixture list (we may all be there after the 5th round matches tonight and tomorrow!). Southampton have to play Ipswich, Leicester and ourselves in those 12 league matches, Ipswich only have to play Southampton, although their usual local derby with Norwich might be a tasty one, as Norwich might well be hoping for a play-off place by then (they lie 7th atm). We have to play “just” Southampton on the last day of the season, cool huh?
Of the “other matches, it’s arguable that we have the “easier” run in, with a large number of our opponents from the lower half of the division (highest atm are dull in 6th) but as we all know, there are no easy games in the Championship.
It is in our hands, we have a vastly superior GD to Ipswich, have a 5 point gap to Southampton, and an eye-watering 16 points to Baggies in 5th. Sure we need to win more than both our nearest rival, and hope that the Foxes hit a bump in the road somewhere, but it IS in our hands to at least gain automatic promotion
The “it’s in our own hands” is the part that worries me.
Here’s my guess at a finishing table
Auto
Leeds 个106
Leicester 个104
Play Offs
Ipswich 95
Norwich 86
West Brom 84
Hull 82
Try again next season
Southampton 80
Preston 78
Coventry City 76
Sunderland 69
Middlesbrough 65
Bristol City 54
Watford 51
Best result we could hope for from the Bournemouth v Leicester game, they win after having to play an extra 30 minutes?
There ya go....
Have to hand it to them too. Overcame disappointment from our match quickly to beat a PL team. And away from home also!
I think we will need to win 9 of the last 12 matches (and draw 1 or 2) to be completely safe. Ridiculous number, but this season has been one for the record books.
As it is, only Leicester are going through to the quarters, would prefer it to have been Soton too, but "content" with the pressure it will exert on the Foxes.
