Rooney is obviously not doing it for the money, so I can't understand why he would think it a good idea to take that job, with Plymouth barely surviving this season. He's unlikely to improve them and there has to be a very high chance of them going down regardless of who they appointed. I would have thought managing in L1 or L2 would have been his best bet for restoring his reputation in the game and pushing his poor win ratio up.
Almost as bizarre an appointment as Birmingham taking him on.

I would think that he still has faith in his management capabilities and thinks he could improve them...I'm assuming he doesn't need the cash or press attention, its desire to come good.

Indeed. My read is exactly that. He wants the next step and Barrow are… well Barrow. As disappointing as it must be to lose him, minded to think there’s a level of responsible ownership here with Barrow not prepared to gamble the future on one man’s ambition.
