The only reason for selecting a player for an international squad should be that their expected performance beats the alternatives. That's it. Any other reason is a mistake.
Having a tantrum because a player doesn't want to play in friendlies outside the window because he was run ragged by a huge season (how many minutes did Jones play for us?) is insane. He wants a potentially jaded player to wear themself out more on a game that literally does not matter and that nobody will even remember a year from now.
