What is the point of having VAR if it isn’t used? As with the majority, to my mind it was a stonewall penalty and should have at least been referred to VAR. Extremely poor refereeing in my opinion. It doesn’t matter how poor or how good Scotland were, they would have almost certainly won the game if the penalty had been awarded.

As for Scotland, I think that they were unlucky tonight as that certainly looked like a penalty but then again they didn't create enough chances in the game and Hungary were always pushing.

The fact is that Scotland simply lack the quality to progress far in these competitions. It's no good having a handful of half decent players in international games, you need the whole team to be of a standard. ( Mind you, even that's no good if your manager can't get them performing...)

Same here Omeg, always support the home nations unless they are playing England. In the Olympics, we are Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so the mentality is different from football as we all cheer on the GB and NI athletes.

It is the footballing mindset that differs I suspect.

As for the penalty that wasn’t. As Leicester says what a poor decision and why no VAR! I thought VAR had to look at anything in the penalty area. Absolutely crazy.

Totally agree with you OB, I support all of the home nations. Most families have some relation who is either from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Mind you, the same applies to them, they should also support England.

I think the “by and large” underplays it Q.

I’ve never met a single Scot or Welsh person that would admit to supporting England against an opponent.

    It’s poppy c o c k.

Your right! When I was early twenty’s i worked for a Scottish company and lived in Edinburgh. Without exception - 100% of the Jocks took the p iss out of the English and would cheer on whoever was playing against England.

Steve Clarke last night reminded me of Southgate! Completely negative and did not have one attempt on goal until 10 mins from the end. Hungary aren’t great but the desire was there to throw caution to the wind and win the game. That’s one thing I don’t like about Carlos too - he sets up not to lose and more times than not the football is dull.

Actually mick that’s not true. I am Welsh born of Welsh parents but have lived in England for all but the first month of my life. I have a grandfather who played rugby for Wales and two cousins who played football for Wales but I back England to the hilt. When Wales play England it’s win, win for me. If an Albion player is in one of the teams I tend to go for that team.

With respect Leics this is a totally different scenario.

Your birthplace and heritage may be Welsh but 99.99% of your life has been in England, I’m sure you grew up feeling English?

If I’d moved to Australia with an infant child I’d fully expect they’d grow up feeling Aussie and wanting to support Australia, if I’d moved there when they were 10+ I’d expect they’d still feel English.

It’s not unlike the situation with my eldest daughter who’s from my wife’s first marriage.

She was six months old when we first met and she hasn’t seen her dad since she was six months old.

She thinks only of me as dad and I never ever think of her any differently than my own two natural children.

You are what you get used to I think.

As an aside, I worked with a lad who was English but his dad Graham Powell played rugby union for Wales in the 50’s and my mate supported Wales at rugby only for that reason.

I agree, you do have a point there mick about living in England for virtually all of my life and have to admit that I probably do feel more English than Welsh.
