I am interested to see the facts as I too thought that Scottish children were not granted places at the University of their choice because some universities were catering for foreign students who paid higher fees.

Indeed, I thought that the Universities were in despair about the low level of funding from the Scottish Government for a home based Scottish student. I think the payment is substantially less than the amount paid to support the education of pupils in senior schools which I thought was more than £8000.

Please don't think this is an attempt at deflection. If more Scottish children are in Scottish Universities that's great. It might however be that the base used when Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh Glasgow was the starting point, and then the technical colleges were converted to Universities is the reason for most of the increase.

I don't read that Scottish Universities are happy with their lot, but I do read that they are seriously concerned that their ability to pull in foreign students to square the books is under pressure from home based Universities in India and China.

    Thanks for the information.
However a 1.6% increase in Scottish students compared to a 37.1% increase in non EU students shows that the universities particularly the ones such St Andrews and Edinburgh are keen to get overseas students who pay the full cost of their degree course.
In my opinion there are too many former technical colleges who are now ‘jumped up’ universities with the daddy of them all, the University of the Highlands and Islands which consists of a rag, tag and bobtail group of former technical colleges including a Gaelic college.

How dare these people have degrees in practical subjects and better themselves to the overall benefit of the nation as a whole? Who let these people out from under our heel?

    Couldn't make this **** up.
