Like for like, Notts have effectively taken 5 less "points" from fixtures with Alfreton and Boston than last season's pre-season. How relevant or not that is remains to be seen. Start well and poor pre-season results are instantly forgotten, start badly and it wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest the warning signs were there.

We need an example of a poor pre-season (mostly failing to beat lower ranked clubs and getting thrashed by all of the better one's) leading into a successful campaign. I can't remember one off the top of my head and I haven't got friendly results stored in such a way I can do a quick check.

There are none, we have always shown signs of brightness before a good campaign, like beating Forest in the Munto pre-season. Even if pre-season results don't matter, the performances do. Is there any sign of things coming together? Playing against a lower league side with 10 men and losing at the death says no.

Well, it is only pre-season, but following on from the struggles of the second half of last season, we are now in considerably worse shape after a lot of ins & outs. It's all looking extremely bleak.

Oh, and despite all the defensive changes we are STILL conceding goals like confetti!

That was total garbage at Boston tohight against a useful looking Boston outfit (although they shouldn't read too much into that as it was only against Notts.)

I was sat in the stand and I couldn't see what Maynard was trying to achieve.

Having seen most of the friendlies some of the new signings don't look good enough for League 2 level plus a couple of players from last season who don't seem to give a fg toss.

I said so toward the end of last season but this clown Maynard has not got a fg clue.He should have been sacked at the end of last season. He is out of his depth as results showed.

Pre season or not pre season the writing is on the wall

If he is still here end of September God help us.

There is a distinct lack of buzz this close season. LW going, SM having a poor start, ML going, departures (whether deserved or not), seeming to have to rely on an unproven forward line. Eleven days before the first fixture and no hype from the club! Let's hope we are in for a pleasant surprise.

Had a wander over to Boston tonight. Other than the first maybe 20-25 minutes that was very poor. Just a carry over from last season with no real plan, no real idea of how we were wanting to play.

He’s persisting with the Jones on the right thing despite it looking no more like to work than it did when he first tried it (Newport apart) only now he’s got an extra right sided player in Gordon who looked decent enough and Cedwyn playing on the left who looked completely unsuited for it.. Just weird.

Oh and a decent scrap at FT which Maynard also seemed to start! What a night for the boy.

Answer - all the opposition players we are getting beaten by!!

After the results that Maynard ‘achieved’ last season I think a lot of fans were starting to give him the benefit of doubt due to the rebuild and dismantling of last seasons defence but whilst results in pre season shouldn’t make or break a manager that benefit of doubt will soon vanish with poor pre season performances capped with defeats. We need a good performance on Saturday to take some positivity into the season.

Scott had the same issue with LW when he played as he was the left number 10 which Didzy did too but he’s ok there because he can create. I feel it’s the same set up as LW but just less gung-ho and it didn’t work towards the end of last season because we can still get targeted at wingback defensively. It’s starting to feel like we need a miracle to get a good start and I’m usually optimistic. I’ll keep the rose tinted on and say it’s down to mixing the teams up and it’s all going to be fine 😂
