Reading the game is much underrated I think, I played with and against a few lads who were overweight and some who were fat and old and was amazed how they could stroll through a game and control it.

At his best, the best we’ve had in this regard at Albion in the past 30 years or more was Yacob at his early days peak.

The bloke had no pace and no physical build yet he was nearly always in exactly the right spot when the ball dropped or was in position to take the ball off the opposing player.

His debut at home to Liverpool on the opening day when we beat them 3-0 with Gera’s long range stunner was a masterclass against Gerrard.

He had him in his pocket the entire game and barely broke sweat.

If you can find highlights it’s worth a watch, a master at work.

Johnny Giles was the same, my old man was a Leeds fan and loved Giles and when we went to Albion matches in 75-76 he pointed out to me how Giles never much moved out of the centre circle and only went around ten yards in any direction at 35-36 years of age.

Dad always said that Giles and Bobby Collins were the best he’d ever seen at reading a game.

Sh it players like me and Andy Johnson ran around a lot giving it 100% all the time, but the very best coast through a game due to a superior brain.

Agreed, good players also seem to have all the time in the world, never seem to panic etc.

I’d say Yokușlu would fall in that category, when on tune. I remember Ipswich away last season, he dominated and had all the time, then 2nd half he had to play CD since Bartley was injured.
