Derek Hales and Mike Flanagan tormented many a defence for Charlton through the 70s.The fruitful partnership was ended when Flanagan, angered by his partner refusal to pass in a promising position, berated him as a 'one-b0ll0cked b@stard.'
A bout of fisticuffs ensued and ,five minutes from the end of an embarrassing 1-1 Cup draw at home to Maidstone, both were dismissed. They did manage to win the replay without them.Hales was sacked, later re-instated,and Flanagan sold to Palace.
As for fighting with opponents, the prize must go to Norman Hunter landing a decent hook to the head of Francis Lee,who got in a few haymakers as it flared up again as they trudged off the field.

Ah yes, Derek Hales, one of those people you imagine must have been born with a full beard.

Hales was deemed as having the most miserable player profile in club history based on his curt, almost monosyllabic effort in the club programme : most memorable match - I don't have one. Favourite film - I don't go to the cinema.Favourite British player - none, superstitions - none, nickname at club - none.
Mind you,if I'd had testicular cancer I probably wouldn't be a barrel of laughs.
