Correct, it's surely what the player himself is and not his clubs haul of trophies.

Very few of you will remember or even know of the fantastic Johnny Haynes of Fulham, former England captain and rated by a lot of the world's experts as one of the finest footballers to grace a football pitch.

He played over 500 games for Fulham in 18 seasons. I may be wrong but I don't think he won a football trophy of any sort.

He was known though for being a leading light and instrumental in the breaking of the maximum wage imposed on pro footballers of £10 per week.

The man scores lots of goals against whipping boys. Never scores in big matches nor against top class teams/nations.

He's not a great goal scorer, the record he holds for England is padded by all the additional matches played today.

Greaves, Charlton, Linaker, even Rooney can be considered great strikers for England.

    Kane is a dude.

Never rated the guy. Apart from Arsenal (14) he's not scored double figures goals against any of the 'Top 4' in 11 seasons.

Also scoring 1 goal in a 1-0 win away at Anfield is a far more valuable goal than scoring 4 at home against Leicester or 3 against Stoke, Burnley, Hull or Southampton.

However, history will remember the totals and the trophies.

I guess the same comments could be leveled at Shearer, A side from his Premier League title with Blackburn, his career could have been far more successful.
