Thread: Gillingham ratings

Pretty easy to discern from the highlights that their goal was offside, and it wasn't even that close. Certainly not one of those where you need to draw the lines on the pitch to work it out. Understandable from the poor sod who gets 'volunteered' to run the line on a Sunday morning. Very poor from a professional lino.

Only way for our goal to be offside is if Brown gets a touch. Watching it live it didn't look like he did - he went for it but he seemed to miss it. The ref was closer, but the rest of his performance didn't give much cause to think he was right.

You can immediately see Brown wagging his finger at the lino as he knows something is up. The lino is stood with his feet together facing the pitch. He should have been walking back towards halfway.

The pen just looked stonewall. I'm not sure what there was to think about. Brown gets there first and gets a foot taken out. It was Brown again though, maybe the ref just didn't like him for some reason...

Hopefully this gets out of the way some of the appalling game changing officiating that is always there in a season. We're never going to win every game, but we certainly did enough to win this one.

Gills fans were singing can we play you every week. To be honest I wouldn't mind that (with a different set of officials). They created almost nothing apart from one offside goal, and as others have said, if that's the best this league has to offer (doubtful) we have a great chance.

I was definitely watching a different game to some. I would add 1 or 2 marks to many of those earlier scores.

I thought overall we played well. I thought we didn’t deserve to lose against a very well drilled, defensively impressive Gillingham side. Great away day performance. We were guilty of missing two sitters, the first has to score after a very good save from their keeper. The second you have to hit the target.

They scored a very good clinical goal. We didn’t have much luck and on another day we win 2-1.

Enjoyable game, two really good sides. What we didn’t do was freeze or underperform against a top side in front of a big crowd. We didn’t deserve to lose but that’s football.

Having watched the highlights I have to agree he was offside for their goal ! On the day I thought he was onside.
I still stick by my matchday view as I saw it from the Pavis on H block, about Austin's goal. There was a flick on and he was offside. Whether the flick was Brown or a defender I wouldn't know.

👍 Having watched it back a few times I'm not sure Brown does go for it, he seems like he ducked under it, maybe he gets a shout from Austin. I didn't think there was a touch at the time, which was why I didn't initially understand the late flag.
I do take back what I said about the ref. Yes, he only gets to see it once, but he wasn't closer, he was bloody miles away and would have had a worse view than half the kop. He was basically guessing. Just what you need.

    Ah well. On we go.

Bass - 7 - Fine, couldn’t do anything with the goal.
Macari - 6 - No complaints, not as useful or influential going forward as he can be.
Platt - 6 - Fine, caught out a bit for the goal but that’s the trade off for his dominance in the air and at the basics.
    Bedeau - 6 - Same really.
Tsaroulla - 6 - Got into two good positions but then wasted them with poor finishes.
Jones - 6 - Thought their full back did a great job on him to be honest, still at the heart of lots of our good things but much quieter than he usually is. Think he plays the lad onside for their goal as well.
Abbott - 5 - Think he was hobbled a bit by the early yellow card which made him tentative for the rest of the game. Obviously should score.
Palmer - 7 - Thought he played well, controlled the midfield.
Crowley - 6 - Lots of touches but just not as influential as he usually is. Struggled to find any meaningful space.
Grant - 5 - Like him as a player but just never got into it. Better when there’s space to break into, moving him to left back for a bit was weird.
McGoldrick - 6 - Did fine but just never fell for him in a position to get a dangerous strike away.

Subs can all have a six as well. Nothing meaningful either way really.

It was one of those days where everyone played absolutely fine, but none of our star men in Jones, Crowley and McGoldrick were outstanding, which very rarely happens, especially at home. Credit goes to Gillingham there.

That said, we still dominated the game and probably did enough to win it, let alone get something from it. Just one of those days, unlucky with the disallowed goal, and unlucky that the three absolutely clear chances fell to completely the wrong players in Tsaroulla, Abbott and Bedeau. One of those drops at the feet of Didzy or Crowley and it’s a goal. Nothing worth worrying about overall.

Not so long ago we beat Grimsby 4-1 with an offside goal, a handball goal, an accidental goal and a wicked deflection. We said at the time that these things even out over the season and clearly the Gods of Football decreed that the Gillingham game was going to be payback time, with interest. No way were they going to allow the ball to go into Gillingham's net on Saturday.

Tsaroulla missed two sitters, the first one down to a rush of blood to the head, the second one unfathomable, I'd have *******ed a Sunday League player for missing that. I'm also told by someone watching the stream that Abbott's miss soon afterwards was just as bad but I haven't seen a replay of that . Bedeau should also have scored very late on, and when we finally did get the ball in the net the Gods played a joke on us and turned the linesman into a human VAR.

We also should have had a penalty, but I have no doubt whatsoever that had it been awarded the keeper would have saved it - it was just one of those days for us. Gillingham are a very good team and will be challenging at the top this season, but on another day we would have put three or four past them. We have to forget it and move onwards and upwards COYP

It’s true that luck evens itself out, but when you get your luck is quite important and it’s a bit annoying to have ours in a game where we’d have won comfortably anyway, and have the opposite happen in a tight game against a team likely to be direct challengers. Onwards, though.

I think the easiest chance fell to Abbott, the others had to be snatched at really

You are joking aren't you? Tsarulla was six yards out with an open goal and the keeper on the floor, it was the sitter of all sitters.

I cant believe the ref had a better view off the line than the lino!...
My seat in The Pavis is just to the left of the halfway line and I felt the player timed his run perfectly for their goal, not sure why Platt stopped playing, he should as others have said made an effort to cut the shout out. I've looked at the Notts disallowed goal 20 times. I can't be sure if Brown touched it, but my instinct says he didn't. It looked a good goal and the linesmen must of thought so, or why didn't he raise his flag immediately. He's then in the position of second guessing himself. I cannot recall in over 50 years of watching Notts an official take so long. We were our own worst enemies though, Tsaroulla, Abbott and Bedau all with good chances.
