    Aside from the suspicion that at least some pollsters see their role as being to influence rather than reflect opinion, it was also observed in the aftermath of the 2016 election that "Silent Trumpers" had been a factor in masking his true support level back then.

    One commentator last night made the observation that some/many Trump supporters are likely to be characteristically suspicious if not hostile about revealing information to pollsters and the media, viewing them all as part of the machinery of the political establishment/mainstream, so it's not all that surprising that the level of Trump's support was underestimated again.
