I met him once, he visited Nelson Fire Station some time late in the 90s. He shook hands with us all and we sat down and had a chat and a brew. I was quite impressed, he was Minister for Transport at the time, and he wanted to talk about the technicalities and difficulties of firefighting in tunnels, more specifically the Channel Tunnel, which had only recently opened and he obviously bore some responsibility for it's safe operation, he'd clearly done his homework and knew what he was talking about, not many do. He went up even more in my estimation when he gave that egg chucker a slap, good for him, he should have hit him harder. He might have been a Labour man, but I liked him.

    RIP Two Jags.
