Ref 0 - one of the worst types of refs, guardian of the boring status quo

    - give a free-kick everytime a defender plays/ask for one, because you're going to get less flak by denying a goal than allowing one
    - take an age for attacking free-kicks to be played, hold everyone up slowly getting your spray, slowly pacing 10 yards

I bet there are less goals in this refs game than the average. Make life easier for yourself at the expense of thousands of people's entertainment and value for money from the ticket price.

Tsaroulla - 6 Tried all match but just couldn't put in that killer cross and doesn't seem able to take the shot himself.

Macari - 7 Solid as ever at the back.

Platt 6.5 - Good at the back but not his usual threat going forward on a day when we should have thrown more men forward.

Ness - 7 looks like a good player. Neat touches, reads the game well, broke up their attacks and turned it around to us going forward.

Palmer - 5.5 Disappointing, too many safe short passes, cannot hit the target and should stay away from shooting. Corners and set pieces very average. Will not be in the side when all midfielders fit.

Abbott - 7 Just shades man of the match. Some great touches, tough tackling, always looking to go forward and breaks up the play really well

Austin - 6 Huffed and Puffed his way through the game, 1 decent shot but largely ineffective.

Brown - 5 Continues to disappoint me. Much more effort today and some nice touches, but NEVER a striker. His touch in the box is often clumsy and shot shy with no power behind them. Doesn't add anything to current set up.

McGoldrick - 6 Covered more ground than anyone BUT that's not always a positive he is after all a striker. Today his shooting boots never even made the locker room.

Jatta -5.5 lots of running and effort but hardly touched the ball and missed couple of tap ins. Not helped by poor set pieces and passing from midfielders.

Subs - Gordon - 5 Largely ineffective and made very little impact on the game.

Scott - 5 Feel for the lad but doesn't look fully fit and again didn't have any influence on the game. His chances of redemption are running out.

Cisse - 7 Best of the bunch, one great block in box to deny a possible goal, few attacking moments of quality and looks tricky.

BOSS - 5 Way too much emphasis on pretty possession play and not enough on actually troubling opposition goal. Yes not helped by injuries but we are just dour and toothless at home.

Recruitment Team - 3 Wake up and smell the coffee !! If you do not deliver a top class striker in January please leave! Lack of depth and fire power is becoming very telling.
Cant argue with those scores.. We had our chances, but we took too much time and too many touches in the box before having a shot.. Same every week..

I find the anti-recruitment narrative bizarre - the key areas of concern (CB and GK) were addressed with proven players who are young enough to get better and have been huge successes.

Jatta has already scored 10 goals this season and been a revelation. We signed two wing backs who got promoted from this league last season who the head coach chooses to play out of position. Abbott is Spurs u23 captain and has been great.

Not every signing will come-off but we?re definitely more hit than miss on that front, certainly over the past few years. The manager isn?t making the most of a very good squad in a poor league - injuries or not there?s absolutely no excuse for not comfortably beating a terrible Newport side today.

Another game where it was difficult to see what the plan was beyond giving a good player the ball and hoping they?d produce a moment of individual quality.

Individual ratings - a lot of ?ok? displays today but nothing outstanding:

    Bass - 6
    Ness - 7
    Platt - 6.5
    Macari - 6.5

    Tsaroulla - 6.5
    Palmer - 6
    Abbott - 7
    Austin - 6

    Brown - 5
    McGoldrick - 6
    Jatta - 5.5

    Gordon - 6
    Scott - 5
    Cisse - 6.5

Bass - 6.5 - Nothing to do. Two hairy moments but some lovely distribution.

Ness - 7 - Very assured. Excellent defender. Very reassuring to see him offer as much of an option going forward as he did.

Platt - 7 - Very positive and front footed defensively. Absolutely bossed Kyle Hudlin.

Macari - 7 - Did what Lewis Macari does. A fine player at this level.

Tsaroulla - 6.5 - Huffed and puffed but not much end product. Lacked support when he had the ball and was often doubled up on.

Austin - 6.5 - Industrious as ever. Some good link up play first half and got forward to good effect in the second.

Palmer - 7 - Good performance. Good use of the ball. Allowed Abbott to flourish.

Abbott - 8 - MOTM - All action. Has a game that contains a bit of everything. Got through some yards today. Cannot be far off his first goal.

Brown - 6 - Played a bit too narrow and left Tsaroulla hanging out wide a little bit. There is definitely a player in there.

McGoldrick - 7 - Faded later on, but looked really good on the ball. Still a real threat.

Jatta - 7 - His link up play was good. Thought he was going to bury the header when he knocked one down for Brown.

Gordon - 5.5 - Lots of crosses but most were quite aimless. If he is coming on, he just needs to use his pace and get to the by-line a bit more often to change it up a bit.

Scott - 6 - Did everything well when he came on. Had a really good chance that he could have taken a touch with. Desperate for a goal.

Cisse - N/A - Not on long enough but nice to see him trusted to come on.

Maynard - 7 - Thought he set us up well tactically. Starting Macari at LCB was a smart move given Austin played wide left. Made the right subs at the right time. He cannot physically go on and score but put the team in a position (by selection and coaching) to do that on multiple occasions today.

IMHO no one could honestly be described as having a poor game today.
I spoke to Stall in passing at HT and we both agreed that Notts didn't start the game with enough intensity.
Tsaroulla was the biggest disappointment today and didn't have his usual pace and drive today.
Didzy had burnt out at the 75 minute stage and young Cisse ought to have been given more game time.
Bedeau was certainly missed today on the left flank.
If Notts were on a winning roll, players wouldn't be taking the extra touch or pass and would have the confidence to get shots off quicker.
Not a dire performance by any means , better second half and credit Newport for their defensive commitment. Nelson Jardim was very pleased with the hard earned point!

Bass 6 - typical game, very little to do, but did what he had to do well
Ness 7 - Like him. Real candidate for a regular starting spot
Platt 7 - Love how he reads the game to snuff things out early and put us back on the attack. Deserves to have better ahead of him.
Macari 7 MoM - Does so much good work, not only with the ball, but is growing as a one-v-one defender too.
Abbott 6 - Took him too long to get into his game. Was great when he did apart from being more clinical in the final third
Palmer 5 - Opposite of Abbott, started great and then got as scrappy as the game. We were desperate for real impact from his position.
Tsaroulla 6 - Consistently positive, a good outlet, but he's going to have to convert that into end product at some point.
McGoldrick 6 - the pick of our frontline. Will have regrets when he looks back at this game
Brown 4 - real off day, had a right to ask SM why he was subbed, but there's an easy answer to that
Austin 4 - a regular place in our starting XI needs to be backed up by real impact, goals, assists, and posing a constant threat.
Jatta 6 - Improved as the game went on, showed nice composure in the box at times. Good to have him back

    Subs
Gordon 5 - tried, but not much came off for him
Scott 5 - OK, needs more confidence
    Cisse 6 - doesn't look out of place as a L2 player
Abbott 6?????? I think you watched a different game to everyone else.

Just watched the whole match. Austin caused more problems for Newport than Palmer, Brown, and McGoldrick. It seems that some see him so much as just a squad player that they don't notice when he gets a decent cross or shot in. I'd give hime 6.5 or 7, and McGoldrick 6 (far from his best), Brown 5.5, and Palmer perhaps 6.5.

Ness was good - reads the game well - and Platt quietly effective. Abbott was lively and did a lot of good stuff. If one or two shots had taken a helpful deflection we'd all be reasonably satisfied, instead of frustrated and critical.

I thought Austin had a reasonable game as well. Particularly 1st half.
Tsaroulla was the most disappointing for me. Didn't beat his man either side all match.
I thought Notts tried to play some decent football but it just didn't come off.
One lucky goal and most of this board would have been fairly happy. The usual suspects excepted. But they would still be moaning even if we managed to get promoted in May.

These ratings, if done objectively, can be a brutal exercise.
One thing I always try to keep in mind is that the marks should roughly reflect the outcome of the match.

Most seem to agree that 6 stands for an average performance. I just totted up my marks and they average out at 5.8 per starter - just below average, and that seems about right for a home game in which we failed to score in a hour and a half against a poor team that were there for the taking.
I think a lot of the numbers on this thread are too generous. The GK and back three gave the front of the team an excellent base to go on and win the game. They made a really bad job of doing that IMO, 4s and 5s are in order because some performances were below average, a couple well below.
