2001 and 2024 were the lowest turnouts for General Elections since 1918. Labour won the majority of seats at the last election in areas with a low turnout. 'Our' constituency had a turnout of 44.1%, a Labour hold with Reform coming in second.

That's not to suggest Labour only won in areas with a low turnout but they ended up winning more often than not in areas where people either couldn't vote for whatever reason (such as postal vote packages not arriving on time) or couldn't be @rsed to.

Personally speaking I would like to see results classed as null and void with a re vote in constituencies where voting turnout is below a specific percentage; say 65% as a random cut off.

To my mind if re votes still don't achieve an acceptable percentage the holding MP keeps their seat if not enough people want them out. Keeps things simple and voters don't get to point the finger when things don't go their way.

I wonder the following. How many people who've signed that online petition bothered to vote in the General Election? Does anyone genuinely believe the only things to come out of a politician's mouth is the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

How many voters knew what was promised in the respective manifestos and did they know what they were voting for? Would they get off their collective backsides if the General Election was re run?

Moral of the story. Get off your backside and exercise your right to vote. And if you don't purely and simply because you think all politicians are a pack of pathological liars you don't really get to have a say anyway because General Elections clearly aren't for everyone.
