If you believe the mess 'is nowhere near the same scale' I can only think you are suffering from memory loss. The mess was so bad BOTH major parties offered austerity as the only way out. Chancellor Alistair Darling said 'It would take two Parliaments of pain' to sort it. Labour realised they had systematically overspent for 13 years and they too would have to dismantle those 'excellent public services.'
