I'm torn on the farmers debate. On the one hand, it's a very unique profession that you can't easily start. It has massive barriers to entry as you need land, machinery, barns etc.. By logic, the only real way to continue it is to hand it down generation to generation and teach them how to be a farmer. The profit margins are getting tighter so paying the tax off would likely be complicated.

On the other hand, to not pay any tax on anything worth over ?1m doesn't feel right. Why shouldn't they pay for it? They don't have to pay a lease or loans for the assets like any other normal business or indeed the person they inherited it from, so surely it's feasible that they could do this over 10 years.

I'm not one in favour of living off parents or grandparents fortune and it's against our values.

Good luck to those who inherit a tidy sum from grandparents or parents. Some parents work hard to pass things down to their children - nothing wrong with that. Against values - what complete bollox as nobody would turn their head if a grand parent or parent left anything. I was left nothing but don?t begrudge anybody anything and to those lucky enough to inherit a tidy sum or win the lottery - a sincere good luck to you! Any parent foregoing day to day luxuries to get their child on the housing ladder or to avoid them being saddled with student debt must be admired.

Why not levy the inheritance tax if and when the farm is sold? After all, family members have probably worked on the farm and thus contributed to its value. I have doubts about the morality of inheritance tax anyway.

If people work hard all their lives and make a success of themselves, even in a small way, why shouldn’t they leave the fruits of their labour to their children and not the state. These individuals haven’t been a burden on society, in fact the opposite. The problem with the Labour Party is that they dumb down everybody to the same level and don’t reward success or encourage excellence. As someone has written before, the closing of state grammar schools is a prime example. Oh no, we mustn’t encourage bright pupils, that isn’t fair!

So true Leicester but a lot of people are jealous. I was not left anything but those who are left an inheritance - good luck to them and marvelous how family members most likely grafted and went without to do this.

It?s nothing on jealousy, but we have people who work seriously hard and can?t afford to own their own house. And people who don?t work that hard and live off their parents or grandparents successes. It doesn?t sit well with me, a modern society shouldn?t work like that.

I agree with you Matt that many people do work hard and still find it difficult and as a society we should help them. On the other hand, don’t punish those who have worked hard, been successful and wish to leave what they’ve worked hard for to their children. My feeling is that we should be more vigilant and seek out the work shy and scroungers in order that those who have worked hard get more for their efforts. Too many of the work shy have got the benefit system off to a fine art and those who really deserve it get very little. This also applies to those who have genuine health issues. Again, we’re not vigilant enough to sort out the deserving from the non deserving.

I am 100% in agreement with this viewpoint.

So is it wrong then I have saved a couple of hundreds of pounds a month for years to provide my daughter with a deposit for her first property? I have scrimped and saved and it?s been really hard going in my case. If others want to blow any spare cash then that?s up to them too.

Working seriously hard? You could say shop workers on the minimum wage work harder than most but they are not paid for their specialist skills - lawyer - banker - surgeon etc.

Never been jealous of anyone and have friends who live in 3 million pound houses and council houses. I judge a person by their genuineness.

Well your daughter is very privileged. In my opinion, there should be more barriers to privilege when the majority are struggling.

For example, if you?ve already bought her a house, why should she inherit your house when you die and have two houses while others have none.
