Thread: Duckadam 1985-86

    Duckadam 1985-86

It?s an Aberdeen site so, rightly, we are parochial but the late, lamented (by me, at least) Donsdaft, once of this parish, used to mention football items from Budapest from time to time. I?m in the city to the south-east of that. which people in the west confuse it with, Bucharest in Romania

Never keen on FSCB (Steaua), probably because their city rivals, Dinamo, play in all red, it is with regret I note yesterday the death of Helmut Duckadam, known here as ?The Hero of Seville?.

Auld buggers like me will remember the 1986 European Cup Final, Steaua v Barcelona, nae a great event, until Duckadam saved all four Barcelona penalties in the shoot out, an unprecedented achievement. Only 65, he leaves a widow and a 16 year old daughter.

Of course, with a little more luck in the quarter final against IFK G?teborg, we would have faced Barcelona in the semi-final and all might have been different.

    I read about that yesterday.

One of the worst games of football I ever watched. I can remember watching it despite being about 12 at the time.

If I remember correctly the game was played in front of a crowd of soldiers, just to make the atmosphere even more intimidating.

I don't know where the soldiers comes from - it was played in Seville with a fair old crowd of 70.000

Starting striker for Barcelona at no 10 that night was Steve Archibald. He was substituted after 100 mins so didn't miss a penalty.

    Yes, you are right.

I can remember the game as it was poor and Archibald playing in it.

The crowd of soldiers must have been another game entirely, but I always remembered it as that game.

Bugging me now, which game it was.

Handin ower wines tae Donsdaft usually involved aboot an hour o' blether in which Ah got tae know the guy behind the 'bluster' .... dinna wish tae burst onybody's bubble, but ... on some o' his mair controversial efforts .... he was haein a fun an' takin the piss

I consistently called out DD as a wind up merchant/caricature in terms of his online persona, he denied this but I always figured I had that right.

Unsurprisingly I?d disagree with most of that however his assessment of Kenny McLean was spot on.

Having known DD reasonably well I can confirm NMN's statement on Kenny McLean. However if Kenny hadn't nailed his colours to the hun mast, then I don't think DD would have been so "vociferous" about him.
