The league table aside, attendances are without doubt the most important stat of all in this game, finding your "natural level" is finishing where your attendances say you should. That's how we judge if clubs are over or under achieving. Gates set a ceiling on what you can realistically achieve.

Salford, despite the ambition of the owners, are still a very small club (1,900) that finished 20th last season.

Our players should have had some then they might have had the runs.

Indeed. Why do people assume that everything is profit on something like The Nest? Won't we need to recoup the considerable investment from buying the place and converting it first?

Mind you, we have bigger issues on the pitch. If you?d told me that that starting XI would lose 3-0 to Salford, I?d never have believed you at 12:30. Completely unacceptable and provides a horrible contrast to the 2-0 win there last season when we largely played them off the park.

I hope the bros are getting their contacts book out, because any more performances like that and we?ll be needing a new coaching team.

Back in the warmth here in Salford.
Agree with Hissing...nice experience coming to this tiny ground. But the performance? We were never in it.

Crowley was no worse than any other player and has the excuse of first game returning from injury.
There's no point focusing on individuals in this debacle, but why Austin and Martin get pitch time is beyond me...

Many, many mistakes and things to blame the management team for tonight. Two I'd like to mention

    - Crowley deeper than Abbott, we needed GA's energy and physicality on the ball. He should've been receiving that pass not DC
    - Ness hadn't done quite enough to grab Macari's place, who didn't deserve to be dropped. Ness is not as good on the ball as Macari and that showed today.

They are to certain extent but ultimately it?s your playing budget, how well you recruit and how you manage your players. I get people are frustrated we don?t have a top 3 budget in line with gates but we need new owners if that?s what we want. They were losing 2m a year in the NL, still losing money now to my knowledge so if we want a higher budget, we need new owners that are willing to lose even more money.

That rarely sustains though if you don't have the gates, there's clubs like Wigan, Wimbledon, Burton and Yeovil who've climbed as high as the top 2 tiers but it always felt inevitable that they'd crash back down again with the attendances they were getting to their "natural level". I expect Bournemouth will end up back in tier 3 at some point whilst Birmingham will grace the top flight again. Gates are what make big clubs what they are and vice-versa.

He put Jatta through on goal at 0-0 for our best chance of the match - which he should have scored from. If he?d put that away, we could have lost 3-1!

Think that was Crowley, not McGoldrick.

Very, very disappointing result, I just wouldn't have expected that.
